In recent years, more people have begun to rethink the way we say goodbye to loved ones, with sustainability and care for the natural world becoming central to funeral choices. Now, a remarkable innovation has reached the UK that is reshaping how we return to the earth: the mushroom coffin which is now available as part of our selection of coffins.
The Loop Living Cocoon™, developed in the Netherlands, is the world’s first “living coffin.” Rather than being built from traditional materials such as wood or wicker, this unique cocoon is grown in just seven days from local mushroom species and upcycled hemp fibres. The result is an entirely natural and biodegradable resting place that supports the cycle of life long after burial.

A New Way of Returning to Nature
What makes the mushroom coffin so innovative is its use of mycelium—the underground root system of fungi, often called nature’s recycler. Mycelium breaks down organic matter and transforms it into nutrients that enrich the soil. By harnessing this natural process, the Living Cocoon accelerates the body’s return to the earth, completing the circle of life in a way that is both symbolic and practical.
Once buried, the Cocoon fully biodegrades within 45 days. Unlike traditional coffins, which may leave behind metal fittings, varnishes, or treated wood, the mushroom coffin becomes part of the ecosystem, enhancing soil biodiversity and feeding the earth. This means our nutrients are returned to the ground in the most natural way possible—helping to regenerate the land and support new life.
Designed for Natural Burial Grounds
The Living Cocoon is particularly suited to natural burial grounds, where the focus is on environmentally friendly practices and preserving nature. While it can technically be used for cremation, its true benefit lies in burial, where it can fulfil its purpose of enriching the soil.
Each Cocoon is lined with a soft bed of moss and includes a moss pillow, providing a natural and comforting interior. The moss, sourced from the Netherlands, is 100% natural and adds a gentle, organic touch to the design.
Thoughtful Practical Features
Despite being grown rather than manufactured, the Cocoon is carefully designed to be practical as well as sustainable. It includes six integrated jute handles, allowing pallbearers to carry it with ease, or it can be shouldered in the traditional way. During the burial, it can be lowered with ropes or traditional webbing.
The Cocoon also has hydrophobic properties, making it suitable for use during funerals held outdoors in the rain. In the UK, it is currently available in the Calm variant shown on this page, rather than the Wild variant with autumnal colours.
Rethinking Funeral Traditions
The introduction of the mushroom coffin reflects a wider cultural shift. Many families today want funeral choices that align with their values, offering dignity for the deceased while caring for the planet. The Cocoon provides a meaningful way to symbolise rebirth, regeneration, and the interconnectedness of life.
Loop Biotech, the Dutch company behind this innovation, was founded with the aim of restoring balance between people and nature. By creating funeral products that enrich the earth, Loop offers a new perspective on how we can “close the loop” of life in harmony with the environment.
The mushroom coffin is more than just a new type of coffin—it represents a step forward in sustainable funerals. By choosing the Loop Living Cocoon™, families can play a part in giving back to the earth, ensuring that even in death, we contribute to life. It is a truly beautiful way to leave the world, nourishing the soil, feeding nature, and becoming one with the earth once more.
