My funeral wishes

“Just stick me in a box…!”

When people are asked about their own funeral, a most common response is, “I don’t want any fuss, just stick me in a box!”

Dig a little deeper, it’s often that they feel turned off by particular elements of a funeral – perhaps the formality of a hearse, a room full of people dressed in black, or the idea of their coffin being carried by strangers.

Or, they just don’t like the idea of anyone mourning for them. The cost of a funeral can be an influencing factor too.

What is easily overlooked, is how a funeral is for the family and friends. Their grief is what you won’t see and a sense of ritual is often needed to help process the thought of life without your presence.

Currently, there has been a growing trend towards Direct Cremation – an unattended funeral.  Whilst this has its place and is cost saving, it can feel too remote for family when the time comes.

Our approach with funerals is that they are a blank sheet.  They can be as simple, or as celebratory as you wish.  Our modern approach sees thoughtful touches you may not know of.

We have compiled a Funeral Wishes booklet, that helps to give you food for thought, and where you can make a note of your thoughts, likes and dislikes.  You could keep this with your Will or give to a trusted family member.

The most important thing is to let your funeral wishes be known.  It is just as helpful to make a note of what you know you wouldn’t want, if  you find it hard to think about what you would want.

Do I need to buy a funeral plan – are they worth it?

Whilst they may seem convenient, the plan will be subject to management fees and the small print may restrict choices.

Many people are unaware that funeral fees are classed a ‘priority debt’ by banks / building societies. The funeral invoice can simply be submitted to their specialist bereavement team. They settle this promptly (subject to sufficient funds) irrespective of whether the account has been frozen or any probate process to be completed.
