The death should be registered within 5 days of the Registrar receiving formal notification of the cause of death by the Medical Examiner or HM Coroner. Please note that you are not able to make an appointment to register until the Medical Examiner has sent the medical documents to the Register Office.
Which Register Office to use?
The registration is only done by prior appointment at the register office in the district or borough in which the death occurred. So if the death occurred within the borough of Richmond upon Thames, then this will be at Richmond Register Office in Twickenham (see directions and map below).
Who should register?
Registration of the death is done in person, typically by either the spouse, partner, family, friend of the person who has died – or by the person arranging the funeral (e.g. the Executor). Ideally no more than two people should attend the appointment. If you have some ID documentation belonging to the person who died (e.g. passport, council tax bill, etc.) that is always helpful to bring along.
How to book the appointment?
Once you have heard from the Medical Examiner or Coroner, call Richmond Register Office on 020 8891 7188 – they will take your details and call you back to book an appointment.
Documents to be issued
At the end of your appointment you will be asked how many copies of the Death Certificate you require. Each copy will cost £12.50 (price correct as at August 2025). The registrar will email the Certificate for Burial or Cremation (known as the ‘Green’ form) to your chosen funeral director.
Tell Us Once
Tell us Once is an optional but very useful service that allows you to notify central and local government departments about a death just once, securely and confidentially, instead of contacting each service separately.
After the death has been registered, the Registrar will give you a unique Tell Us Once reference number, which you can use to access the service online.
How to find Richmond Register Office
The register office is at York House, Richmond Road, Twickenham TW1 3AA which is next to the Civic Centre in Twickenham. It is a small office block to the left of the main York House building – you will see a sign on the wall for the register office:

If you have an appointment to register the death at Richmond Register Office, families often find it convenient to schedule a meeting with White Rose Modern Funerals immediately after the appointment, as our office is located at the other end of Church Street (see directions to our Twickenham shop).
